Idaho Attorney General Warns of Mortgage Settlement Scams

Nationwide, scammers posing as bank workers and settlement administrators have been scamming homeowners into providing bank account numbers and credit card information by telling them that they have money from the recent multistate mortgage servicer settlement to put into their accounts.

"Consumers should never give their bank account or credit card numbers to someone who calls them," Idaho Attorney General Wasden said. "The people and organizations who are part of this settlement will never call asking for [that information]."

Attorney General Wasden has also warned homeowners to avoid online advertisements that offer to help borrowers secure loan modifications for a fee. In Idaho, it is illegal to charge for loan modification services. Consumers in financial distress have many free counseling options, including the Homeowner’s HOPE Hotline, 888-995-HOPE.
